With such vision, ego is a tool for developing the self: ego gives the self a reason to evolve and grow by giving the self pride and shame.

Ego≠self. Ego=self-consciousness (w/shame, pride etc.) At first you try to fulfill an ego, an image of "yourself" or "who you want to be".
