This, to me, seems to be the entire point of a calling: that one is inexplicably but absolutely willing, in the grounds of their being, to sacrifice everything else; that it is not about what one is looking to get, but what one is willing to give so they can ascend that path.

I remember another anecdote from a jazz book, where the author detailed how students would sometimes ask him when they would get the "rewards" of practice: money, fame, gigs, record contracts etc. He would shake his head and tell them "Being able to improvise IS the reward!"
