The fundamental quality of a healthy human being is the ability to relate, which is not only the capacity to listen, to understand, and to empathize, but more importantly, the capacity to let oneself be seen, heard, and empathized with; to relate is to reveal oneself.

You're absolutely right. I'd like to add that 'to relate' is also to connect with (someone or something), join, unite - to come together as one with a corresponding loss of identity of each unit.

Jazz improvisation metaphor is a good example. Paradoxically, it does not preclude the expression of individual uniqueness.

To relate is to become attuned to each other. In a highly attuned relationship there is a perfect balance between one's capacity to listen, to understand and to empathize, and the capacity to let oneself be seen, heard, and empathized with.
