You're absolutely right. I'd like to add that 'to relate' is also to connect with (someone or something), join, unite - to come together as one with a corresponding loss of identity of each unit.

To relate is to become attuned to each other. In a highly attuned relationship there is a perfect balance between one's capacity to listen, to understand and to empathize, and the capacity to let oneself be seen, heard, and empathized with.
