Peterson has intuited that most people do not desire objective change (and what it entails) but the subjective feeling of having the ability to change; therefore in his desire to raise everyone up he has reflexively limited the purview of his admonition to an extremely basic act.https://twitter.com/artfulfuture/status/1046182136825499653 …

Envious much?

Not one bit.

Then I guess I’ll try to understand what you’re saying. I think he’s just saying start where you are.
-
Indeed, but where you are, where I am, and where Joe Schmo is, is not the same place. And it definitely doesn't come down to cleaning your room.
-
His admonition wasn’t to clean your room.

Ah yes, the paradox of 'self-improvement'. We assume the self that tries to improve and the self that is to be improved are mutually exclusive, like a dog chasing it's own tail. To come to terms with this implicit contradiction is the beginning of something beautiful.

It is about building habits. Starting small. Gaining momentum. It is how I've built my habit for meditation. Start with 5 minutes every morning, up it by a minute every week. Now at 18 mins a day. Consistent. A small example, but applied to other aspects in life -- huge.

I thought he used "clean your room" as metaphor to say take care of your own development before you try imposing your view of how things should be to the outside world and that it was blown way out of proportion compared to some of his actually valuable input.
