The problem on the other side, which I am unfortunately guilty of, is focusing on the 'how' or 'what'. This is fruitless. The only way to help the situation (and, maybe, the cheater) is to expose them for what they are as much as possible, and cut the cord.

Agreed. I do think there are some cases when a party cheats, feels contrition, and lets the other party know - perhaps these can be healed. But these are rare. I wouldn't tolerate them anyway.
