Reading multiple books simultaneously, quitting those that are not engaging, constantly picking up new ones, is the antifragile approach to self-educating.

Actually @nntaleb spells it out in Ch. 17 of Antifragile "The minute I was bored with a book or subject I moved to another one [...] The trick is to be bored with a specific book, rather than the act of reading. Avoidance of boredom is the only worthy mode of action."

There is little upside and much potential downside in committing to a single source of entertainment, intellectual stimulation, or source of information.

Heuristic - Curiosity driven reading. Choose what feels most interesting at a given time. I've been picking up and switching books like crazy these days and the results are phenomenal.

I am embarrassed to say that books are like a basement fridge for me, filled with many types of cheeses. I am like this little rat that takes a bite from one of them every day, munch another one the next day. I don't like finishing any, so I avoid taking the last bite.

Multiple books about unrelated topics moves one into divergent thinking (creating ideas to improve or create something new), then you move into multiple books about related topics and focus into convergent thinking (make things happen: fast & efficiently). The cycle then repeats.

Thread of books I'm reading in 2018. Deciding that I'm going to focus on optimizing for "books started" (which is fun and interesting) rather than "books finished" (which for me has a sort of masochistic, completionist connotation I'd like to be free of).

I somewhat agree, but don’t you think that getting substance from a book sometimes requires being uninterested for a few chapters? You can’t give up too early.

Cell phones are great for this. An ebook reader makes it easy to carry multiple volumes and pick up where you left off.

With many books, simply knowledge of their existence is a significant portion of the information content.

Although now that I think about it, I do read multiple books simultaneously. Right now reading 3, and only because I actively resisted starting more.
