The biggest obstacle of progress is conflicting motivations, and perhaps nothing is more conflicting than desiring change while wanting to preserve the same self-image. Intelligent people fail because they repeatedly refuse to be anything less than too smart for their own good.

That's the whole challenge, isn't it? Living by many virtues and that results in conflicting motivations.

My idea is to live by necessity first; virtue follows naturally, and I can't see it existing without it.
