    The biggest obstacle of progress is conflicting motivations, and perhaps nothing is more conflicting than desiring change while wanting to preserve the same self-image. Intelligent people fail because they repeatedly refuse to be anything less than too smart for their own good.

        The problem goes somewhat deeper than that. It's not just a desire of change, but a desire to be exceptional, the reproduction of one's memes. It's not just preservation of an image, but avoidance of rejection, of not fitting in. Otto Rank called this the fears of life and death.
