It’s a complex subject. Now that people have voiced their feelings, I’d leave the decision of removal to local councils and institutions that harbour the edifices. There are heavier weight challenges ahead that should be addressed.

Surely this is a necessary process we need to go through so we can collectively and definitively conclude that the person doesn’t deserve to have a statue?

By presenting it this way, it’s obvs the man was a knob and we should remove it, but it also informs us as to why he had a statue in the first place (i.e. that he was rich and found a way of making himself richer
)
