I was with about 50 protesters in Kenton Park - the vibe was very chill, people were eating and hanging out. A medic told me he expected it to be a fairly quiet night. Then about as many riot police showed up. 10 minutes later, it had descended into chaos.
Police said that they had observed people in Kenton Park “carrying shields, wearing body armor and helmets.” “The posture of the gathering suggested that it would become violent, as many such gatherings have been over the past 120-plus days"
Anyway I saw just a sliver of what life has been like in Portland for the last few months and I was shocked. Much respect to the local journos who have been on the ground throughout all of this.
These days? It's been going on for months.
It's worth noting that this is new to many of us. Four months ago we didn't have gas masks, or helmets, or know the right solution for washing out tear gas. Most of us were regular folks with boring jobs. We aren't out there because we want to, but because we have to.
