To be clear: I’m not “attacking” Hulu. I would just hate for the seriousness of this moment and movement to get lost in symbolic (and sometimes silly) overcorrections. Impact on real lives should be the measure of any change worthy of a PR push.

I have a similar rant about this: https://metro.co.uk/2020/06/27/community-episode-pulled-streaming-due-use-blackface-12910111/ … So they think Black people are so stupid that they don't understand the difference between blackface and Cosplay

I beleive the tactic here is to intentionally go overboard by changing things that might be offensive, so the argument can be made "see, this is all silly...lets stop trying to fix things that need fixing".
-
I don't think it's a tactic, I think people legitimately think they're helping by censoring old media etc. Good intentions that aren't well thought out can lead to unintended consequences.

I don't question Hulu's motives, but trivializing the movement through actions like this can do a lot of harm, especially with those who for the first time are coming to grips with systemic racism and may still be on fence. Don't want to push them the wrong way.

...I'm gonna go ahead and listen to the Black people up and down this thread questioning Hulu's motives. At best they're missing the point entirely. At worse it's a calculated action to avoid a much bigger and more difficult self reckoning.
