I mean, yes, a story centered on a mom, especially with young kids, might very well grapple with the possible impact of her loss but that would be one of the things that would make it different and interesting.

But "think of her children" is such an easy way to justify holding women back that I also can't let it stop there. Because we should be saying "think of his kids" with equal vigor about the dads, and sometimes we do, but mostly we don't.

Beyond that, said mom could be older, with grown children, or she could have a nurturing partner, or her kids could be being raised by an extended family/close community. Or it could be the worst case and her loss would be immeasurable but fate wouldn't give a shit.

For whatever reason, she and she alone would do what she has to do. The risk would be worth it, or it actually really wouldn't but she would have no choice. And those are all interesting stories, and only the top of the iceberg. So yeah, more moms. Please.

Woke up this morning to a lot of good discussion here but, appropriately, spent most of the night with my kids battling over who got to sleep draped over my chest and so I just scrolled on by most of it.

Frustratingly, the closest I can think of is Edea in FF8. She was the...Matron? of an orphanage that housed literally all of the main characters. And is a (the?) primary antagonist

There are some interesting mom characters in games. But they are almost never playable and rarer still are they a protagonist.

Arioch from Drakengard was a mother and is a playable main character..... it's erm.... it's Drakengard though so... not exactly a cheery example

Bound is exploring the motherhood to be very gracefully. It’s the sole game I can think of from the top of my head where you can actually play a pregnant woman who struggles to walk. As a mother of 2 this struck home.

I didn't love the gameplay in Bound, but that opening bit and the transition to the core mechanics exposing what the game is actually going to be *about* absolutely stuck with me.
