You fall in love with Kafka & he prepares you to one day discover & fall in love with Gogol, who makes you fall in love again anew with Kafka, & so on & so forth. At some point, Tanpinar enters the ménage to make it à trois.

“I distinctly recall […] reading “The Judgment” aloud and bursting out laughing […] Later I learned that Kafka himself would erupt into laughter while reading his stories to his friends, and I was surprised only that this was portrayed as surprising.” nytimes.com/2023/02/02/opi

My latest tied to the MP tragedy: A love letter to ballroom, an artform that countless Asian immigrants have leaned on as a rare opportunity to prioritize their own joy after weathering the stress of immigration & creating a life for their families.

99.9% of gun owners may be law abiding, but they allow the .1% to hold millions of us hostage to daily carnage. This is a grave injustice, that no one takes responsibility for. We are Americans, born free, in chains forged by the gun lobby and manufacturers who profit off death.

This week is the 2,336th march of the Mothers of family members disappeared in Argentina during a military dictatorship in the 1970’s/80’s. I’ve been to these marches. They’re a powerful embodiment of: >grief >a quest for justice >holding govt to account amp.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr

If you’re going to quote & authentically honor my father on #MLKDay, commit to embracing a ‘World House’ perspective. Determine how you’ll disrupt unjust systems & thinking with nonviolent strategy. Support policies that reflect higher consciousness. Make no excuses for hate.

Republicans are lying about women not being arrested for abortions. They’ve admitted (bragged?) that they’re going to use other laws as workarounds to imprison women. They are so sick & twisted & sexist… it’s just… #AbortionIsHealthcare #WomensRightsAreHumanRights

When Roe was overturned, Alabama AG Steve Marshall assured voters the state's abortion ban would never criminalize women. This weekend, his office told a conservative reporter they plan to get around that promise by arresting women using a *different law* jessica.substack.com/p/republicans-

If you keep a buncha browser tabs open here is an EXCELLENT trick for how to copy them all into a notes doc in a few easy steps. I just tried it — excellent #lifehack

Regardless of what happens with the Speaker vote today, Republicans owe their slim majority to gerrymandering in Texas where based on their share of the vote they should have 21 seats among the Texas delegation instead of the 25 they drew for themselves. dallasnews.com/news/politics/
Profoundly moving story of a blind young Nazi Resistance fighter, one of the few to survive Buchenwald. goodreads.com/book/show/1824

Portrait of a young man with dark hair. His eyes are half open and pointed downward. He is wearing a dark suit jacket, a white-collared shirt, and a medium-dark tie. His expression is serious. The background is a medium-light shade.
"Light is in us, even if we have no eyes," wrote French resistance member Jacques Lusseyran. Blinded as a child, he used his strong memory and language skills to assist the resistance. He was arrested in 1943 and survived for nearly 15 months in Buchenwald. 📷: Jacques Lusseyran

Sometimes I teach people a series of memory writing techniques to open the trap doors of the mind— it is like this.

“If you have a deep scar, that is a door, if you have an old, old story, that is a door. If you love the sky and the water so much that you almost cannot bear it, that is a door. If you yearn for a deeper life, a full life, a sane life, that is a door.” — Clarissa Pinkola Estés
