What is the equivalent of making a billion dollars in academia? Publishing a Nature paper is cool but routine. Why are extraordinary papers mixed with merely great ones? Would being able to separate them increase scientists' propensity to take risk?

Too large delay and effects are too uncertain! Imagine if only one billion dollar company with a maximum of three co-founders was allowed every year

I disagree. You publish in Nature along the way and are well-known in the community. The number of unicorns is comparable with the number of awards. The founding teams are small.
