Our January theme is "release date." Are we looking for content about prison? The sweet inevitability of death? The bungled release of your garage wizard metal band's first album? Literally anything that this vague ass prompt inspires you to create? Yes.

Mind you, my default explanation is always "slapstick incompetence," but, Christ, sometimes it's impossible to tell. (See also: Epstein, Jeffrey.)

Is there a term for the point at which conspiratorial malevolence and slapstick incompetence become totally indistinguishable from each other?

Imagine being Corey Booker or one of the other poor schmucks who dropped out and learning tonight that you could have gotten away with just pretending you won Iowa.

Sure, you could be cynical about the complete and hilarious failure of our democratic process, but I'd rather watch each candidate give their victory speech and pretend that I've gained the power to exist in five different parallel realities simultaneously.

I know schadenfreude is supposed to be my thing and I should be enjoying this clusterfuck, but, honestly, I just want to be able to go to sleep before 4 am.

I know tone is often unknowable on the internet, so, in case there's any confusion, that was an enthusiastic "oh fuck," not a distressed one (at least initially).

Watched the Bojack Horseman finale last night, and I was planning to capitalize on that fact with a few pretentious tweets, but I've already forgotten it.

If you want to read these bad poems I wrote, you probably should do it today, because they're only going to get worse with the passage of time.

Working on a possible extremely late addition to our "release date" theme/entry for the poetry jam won't shut up about, while thinking about how to create truly ephemeral/disposable art that exists long after its value is used up, like non-biodegradable trash.

Question: Let's say you're explicitly trying to craft a collection of poems that would only be relevant for a single day, but wouldn't "self-destruct" or otherwise be destroyed at the end of the day in question. What are some techniques you might use to accomplish this?

I'm feeling a little spicy today so here's my take: the larger online lit "community" whatever that is polices interpersonal interactions for publishing consideration because they've forfeited on the idea that art itself can be good or bad so that's the only criteria they have

There is no "context" that justifies this. We have a rich history of literature written by people in prison. People like Jean Genet, Iceberg Slim. You never unpublish someone for being a bad person or doing bad things. Context doesn't matter, this is cyber-book burning.

Here's my direct response to the editors in question. I'm adding it to this thread so anyone who wants clarity about where we stand doesn't have to dig through the replies.

This is an embarrassment. Straight up. Shameful. I feel like I say this twelve times a week, but: Stand by art. Stand by artists. That's it. Everything else is a distraction and a disgrace.

I joke a lot about our unprofessional aesthetic, but I honestly can't imagine a more egregious dereliction of duty as an editor than to unpublish work that an author has surrendered into your care over some petty internet bullshit.
