Decades? I can’t imagine keeping it up that long, and I was diagnosed as “high-functioning”. I do keep it up for long enough periods to socially engage outside the home, which is plenty draining, though…
It has been fascinating, and very touching, to read some accounts of people passing as neurotypical for decades and then going through autistic burnout, as the maintenance cost of social-masking outstripped available resources. I had no idea this was a thing until very recently.
