I think that's a good question to ask a teacher if one is practicing in this way. Esoteric teachings are/were "intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest." OFC, it doesn't make esoteric better than exoteric.
This feels to me like a slippery response - but I’m honestly not sure how to even begin to approach that question. I’m really in no way qualified. If you have any thoughts on the matter I’d be happy to hear/see them.

Indeed, these are potentially powerful practices, but they require the conjunction of a properly trained teacher, a properly prepared student, and clear and honest communication. In my experience, this conjunction is rare.

Especially difficult in the presence of cultural, linguistic, and stylistic barriers. The contemporary practice of teachers flying all over the world, and being able to spend little time with a student over the course of a year, add to existing barriers.
