Sure - but I’ve met plenty of people who take the possibility of something not dying, and cling onto it with a death-grip, thus driving their behaviour and beliefs in all sorts of funny directions. It actually amplifies their suffering and anxiety. It can remain open hypothesis.

There is a point, in my experience, where you will "find out". That said, all bodies are bodies, whether physical or not, and they will all end.

Find out what, exactly? Say more please Ian. I’m not jousting here (just for twitter clarity). I’m a comparative religion geek, so I’m open to the plurality of mystical interpretation. Just curious 🙂

whether there is something more than the physical body & thus something that continues. (I'm not talking "the witness" but non meat bodies.) It's often considered bad form/not useful to talk about such things, however because they lead to the attachments you mention.

the problem is that being attached to your spirit/subtle body/ka/bibop... whatever, is still not enlightenment. It makes you a wizard or shaman or whatever, but not enlightened. There are a lot of very advanced mystics who have made this mistake.

if you want the non-meat stuff, then go down the paths that offer it. The top level of taoist meditation is about this; the Hindus offer it thru Kundalini and Kriya Yoga among others and the Tibetans have a ton of this stuff (and it causes great problems.)

‘causes great problems’ - for the practitioner, or did you mean for the tradition, with regards to orthodoxy? Fwiw, I train predominantly in a kagyu-nyingma lineage. Although others have had a big influence on my practice.

Magical power w/o enlightenment has a lot of bad ends. You see it with a lot of modern day mages. It can warp the tradition, as well. Constant reincarnation (and Tibetans believe in this, it is not carp) causes issues as well.

There is this vast strain in western mysticism that has bought into materialism as a metaphysic & as a result does not take the clear words and testimony of the vast history of mysticism seriously at all. "They were all mistaken/deluded & we are right." Oh?

But the vast history of mysticisms often disagree on some really fundamental stuff...I’m not convinced by perennial philosophy type stuff - so I have a hard time beleieveing that various mystics’ claims should be taken on face value. Same goes for materialists, of course.

I find what you’re saying very interesting, although I don’t think I understand you completely. So you highlighted the ways in which certain wizardy/shaman/powers types aren’t enlightened, which many agree with. What then, do you see as enlightenment? (If it’s possible to frame)

Seem to be a few different things that might be enlightenment. "I am everything/I am the witness/I don't exist" is the most common (and very close to the same thing. What I would suggest is not enlightenment is the realization/achievement of a new and better body.

that does not mean that getting such a thing is bad, however. By all accounts it is very worth doing. But simply attaching to a new body/sensation set is not enlightenment.
