Contemplative field-notes: You certainly need a teacher to learn mystical practice/s - which means you probably have to engage with some sort of community. Do not allow yourself to get wrapped up w/ those who want to proselytise. Guard your energy for that which matters.

Largely no. I like
@kenmcleod categories of mystical, religious and therapeutic - and almost all three exist to some extend in all practitioners, and most communities (even heavily concentrated on mysticism) have a bunch of people who are high in the ‘religious’ component.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
I know of several Buddhist communities who have a component of prosletysing - whether that be local meditation groups or marketing campaigns. I’m happy to practice with anyone, but personally have zero energy to give to ‘outreach’ or promotion etc.

I understand that it can be important to have a certain amount of members in order to financially maintain a community, but I personally believe that an honest group of practitioners would basically need zero finances - access to email + an understanding of samaya would suffice.

this would require the use of a member's home for practice, etc., no?

Something like that, but that doesn’t necessitate marketing campaigns and groups to get members to pay the salaries and bills etc.
It’s an important facet of sangha, but not one I have much time or enthusiasm for. If I were less deluded I might see the situation clearer
