Contemplative field-notes: You certainly need a teacher to learn mystical practice/s - which means you probably have to engage with some sort of community. Do not allow yourself to get wrapped up w/ those who want to proselytise. Guard your energy for that which matters.

I know of several Buddhist communities who have a component of prosletysing - whether that be local meditation groups or marketing campaigns. I’m happy to practice with anyone, but personally have zero energy to give to ‘outreach’ or promotion etc.

I understand that it can be important to have a certain amount of members in order to financially maintain a community, but I personally believe that an honest group of practitioners would basically need zero finances - access to email + an understanding of samaya would suffice.
