Just clicked: 70s Trungpa talked about stages of sitting mediation experience as: Shamatha Vipahsyana Mahavipashyana (his coinage?) Mahamudra. Perhaps this was some sort of a reworking of the four yogas of mahamudra? As Reggie Ray said he never 'formally' taught mahamudra.

Although I trust Reggie Ray is right about that, there are plenty of 'TPToTOoD' materials where Trungpa introduces the topic to his students. Several of his students have said to me directly that he was nearly always talking about Mahamudra, if you can hear it (self-secret).

I'm sure Reggie had a point, but this is not true. Trungpa is on record talking about Mahamudra many times.

He talked about it, he talked about Milarepa in relation to it, he talked about the tradition, certain doha, and sketched ground/path/fruition via a commentary of Lodro Thayes Mahamudra song. But did he ever formally teach the practices? Reggie says not.

Of course, I can see why lots of people would say he did, and they he did constantly. I can pull out lots of transcripted material which sounds a lot like mahamudra (both sutra, essence and tantra), but I’ve never heard anything of his that presents the practices, explicitly.

I guess I see the argument, it just seems like a weird angle. In "Sadhana of Mahamudra Sourcebook" he talks about combining mahamudra n dzog

Anyway, this was just a coffee break thought - haven’t checked it or fleshed it out at all. Might send an email to some Trungpa students and see if I get anything of interest back.

Ooh, yeah that's always interesting. They're generally wonderful and eccentric.
