Well, @kenmcleod is writing a book....Vajrayana techniques are really wrapped up in tradition and student-teacher relationship. I linked the study because you asked about cognitive abilities, and that is the only study I know which explored that function in a comparative way.

I think Michael has a background in Hindu Tantra (similar aspects to Vajrayana), maybe he could point you in the right direction. I guess if I pushed myself I'd probably suggest Dr. Reggie Ray's 'Secret of The Vajra World'. But I don't practice much tantra, mostly Mahamudra.
