The idea & performance of a spiritual aesthetic is just materialism masquerading as transcendent. Chögyam Trungpa called this spiritual materialism.

I’m trying to remember the name of the religious studies guy who ranted about people using ‘performative religion’ as a negative, and then just yelled about why Christianity warped our understanding of how performance can lead in to ways of understanding vs it being fake & gross.
