I'm 25 minutes into this talk & enjoying it a lot. Very tricky area & it matters. There are significant risks (re: the phenomena and our ways of understanding them). Traditional models may be too magical, but naturalistic models could have other big issues (like lost know-how).

I have to go do something else but I'll think about this later. In the meantime, you might enjoy this: https://unfetteredmind.org/when-energy-runs-wild/ …. Also, I wonder whether

I agree that naturalistic explanations might be missing out on something. I guess I am just curious because there are many 'magical' explanations but very few or no naturalistic accounts. Seems like an important thing. And that article is very relatable.

I guess I am chasing the dragon in some sense as that article points. Because my usual state is highly depressive but meditation seems to change that. But sometimes it's too much so I am trying to understand it more.

Sounds like a good place to learn from, a rich environment. Depression sucks, but maybe the texture of depression could show you something about the ways things get stuck knotted, vs when things seem to flow a bit more. Depression is a weird one.

I hope this doesn’t sound like obscurantist bullshit. I feel like I’ve learnt a lot from depression, but it’s hard to talk about in a fruitful way. IME its similar to talk about ‘energy’. Best you can hope for are good hints, and that you might discover something trustworthy

I understand...to me its really difficult because I was massively depressed from 15-20 and those were the worst years of my life. So I have a certain unwillingness to work with depression and I try to stamp out the slightest whiff of it by drugs or supplements.

And that's certainly better than before but it's still rather finicky. So obviously learning to sit with it and work with it is the next step towards stabilizing my energy levels which is proving rather difficult.

Anyway, would you mind sharing practices you found useful? Or what you learned from it? Or... I don't know, whatever vague words of advice you can muster.
