I've touched a few raw nerves myself recently. I tend to go into over communicative / empathic mode when I do and talk it through and it's generally turned out fine but it's been emotionally rough and hard work for all involved.
I’ve apologised where appropriate, other than that dunno 
I’ve sort of internally resolved to at least cut down on dark humour. That shit isn’t working.
I’m also masking a lot less, no point spending energy on communication styles which are backfiring in this situation.
