coherence therapy calls this "symptom coherence" - taking the stance that every thing you do that drives you nuts makes deep sense once you get the underlying emotional reality that's driving it. it very cleanly articulates something i've been grasping at for years and years

it's sort of impossible to convincingly explain via text, there's no real substitute for just directly experiencing how much your own behavior makes sense. but e.g. you don't just avoid going to the gym because you're "lazy," there is an actual coherent emotional logic somewhere

this seems more or less identical to Kegan’s system in Immunity To Change, except that Kegan takes the stance that the change is more gradual (rather than all-at-once reconsolidation)

Yeah, deep similarities. Probably faster reconsolidation is in part because Coherence Therapy folks seem to have much better models & methods for surfacing the actual unconscious "competing commitments" (as Kegan calls them). getting the wording right is really important in my experience. if you only get the wording half-right in a cognitive sort of way it won't have anywhere near the impact of nailing the wording in "limbic language"

Yeah, if you try to fill out the table, w/o using limbic language & testing for resonance, 1 of 2 things'll happen: 1. your guess will be inaccurate and you won't really notice 2. your guess will be spot on but it won't actually HIT YOU—so still no agency:https://twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/status/1215844953299001344 …

ex: i was working with "i don't have a place i can call home" and that registered moderately but didn't quite hit the spot. i had to clarify exactly what "home" meant in limbic language and got "i don't have a place i get to feel good and warm and safe" and sobbed

This is interesting in that needing to get the wording exactly right in CT is something that doesn't resonate that strongly with me. I do try to hit upon the right wording sometimes, but figuring out the belief in a non-verbal form is much more common for me.

Yeah I’m finding this utterly fascinating re: ‘limbic language’, and I don’t think I really relate to it....super interesting. Also I didn’t know Kegan had a system like CT.

So is it sort of like you get the wording just so to the point it resonates and triggers some sort of emotional response?
