His case against belief is religious as opposed to scientific arguments against belief we are familiar w thx to the noisy atheists. Feels weird bc religion & belief are conceptually so closely related for me but Carse points out that religion isn’t strictly a matter of believing

Religions don’t actually comprehend their own mysteries, they’re full of internal theological controversy. Unknowability needs to be a bigger factor in our conception of religion.

For religious people this unknowability seems to cultivate a sense of wonder that emerges from recognizing the unknown even “at the heart of our most emphatic certainties.” Carse calls this a sort of “higher ignorance” that informs even ordinary experience.

So yeah religion, can lead to absolutists but as far as Carse is concerned, by their own standards they miss the point. Belief is messy in ways that are often overlooked & given the obvious & violent pitfalls of rigid conceptions of belief, a fuller religious account is important
