TIL ‘crop factor’ is a thing, so the 50mm works at something like 70mm....I think
Is that right @cwage?

depends on the sensor -- for APS-C it's a 1.6x effect, so 50mm is effective 80mm

phew, too many to mention, and highly context dependent. i have some personal favorites in the vintage arena but also too many to tweet. thought about doing a short blog post on my faves though

:) I'd love to read it if you write it. Been a lurker in this space. Considering engagement now. Been thinking about what lenses I should buy first. Thinking sigma 16mm f1.4 and 30mm f2.8 for starters.

if you are just starting out, it's hard to beat a simple 50mm -- almost every manufacturer makes an amazing/light/sharp 50/1.8 prime

I don't have any skill with a 50mm/ I don't enjoy clicking pictures with it. My brief stints with a friend's DSLR had me shooting with a 30mm almost all the time. A full frame 24mm is very very pleasing. That's why I thought I'll do 16 and 30. Is that sensible?

have you recognized what you like about a wider FoV?

i like it for street photography that can still be a "portrait" but having more contextual clues that make it less boring than "just a tightly cropped person"
