Is there a reliable plan of action for making some activity free in terms of spoons? It feels like you ought to be able to practice it.

I think it depends a lot on the activity. Some activities are always going to take spoons, but some probably start to approach zero spoons as you transition from conscious competence to unconscious competence in them.

This rings true for me. Also the cost can inflate rapidly if there is friction in the system — eg: stress, tension — so part of learning how to do stuff more efficiently (spoon wise) necessarily relates to internal patterns, and that relates to generative activities also.
