There are two books by Fabrice Midal which offer some retrospective. They're good in a sense, not without partiality and some hagiography. Irrespective of what one thinks, he is a fascinating cultural figure who played a pivotal role in the history.
As for my thoughts, I never knew the man personally but he has been a source of inspiration and I have a positive connection with some of the people he had a role in training. I don't feel personally driven to resolve or defend his behaviour one way or the other particularly.

From a religious studies perspective there is a lot of scope for discussion of Trungpa re: religion and artistic expression, cultural translation, religious innovation/adaption, institutional authority, etc. I find him thoroughly fascinating, even if he did act like a mad drunk.
