i don't have much advice because i've always found experimentation to be the best way to learn -- you looking for technical tips or .. ?
Duly noted. I’m not sure what I’m looking for, I suppose I’m looking to find out what decent photographers think is/isn’t salient for a beginner.

honestly i think my advice would be to get a cheap digital camera to learn on -- the feedback loop with digital is just so much faster vs. waiting for film development
