The two professional and one very good amateur photographers I know are all incapable and/or unwilling to teach me, so I’ve been googling and experimenting a bit. Recommendations welcome.

Duly noted. I’m not sure what I’m looking for, I suppose I’m looking to find out what decent photographers think is/isn’t salient for a beginner.

Hey! I shoot a fair bit of film. Not sure of where you’re at, but I found the exposure triangle concept very helpful as a framework for thinking about shooting manual - lots of explanations if you google. Also http://butkus.org has a whole bunch of scanned camera manuals
