I published some of my notes on the opposite of striving for non-emotionally (which I think is a dead end). Hopefully will make more sense than my snarky jokehttps://twitter.com/misen__/status/1163076026219552768?s=20 …

Renunciation seems to be the first step for many of us...

Yeah....I'm currently tapping out some notes on the topic to see if I can come up with anything more productive than a silly joke, but it's somewhat of a minefield. PS: I have no clue how people can teach this stuff in a systemic way to large-ish groups of people at a time.

Perhaps it would be more helpful to make a distinction between non-emotional vs non-reactionary. Without emotion the depth of connection is limited, but being led astray by emotions can be just as bad. It is important to be informed by emotion but also be mindful of our response.

Couldn't have said it any better! Also, imo what the original tweet refers to as 'non-emotional' is the choice of calm and due consideration. But I think it's the other way round

I don't pretend to fully understand it, but as a student the eventual Zen teacher, Hakuin, was distressed a former Zen teacher, Yantou, had screamed when murdered by bandits. With an awakening experience, though, Hakuin realized he & Yantou were participants in the same Miracle.
