What are the top-quality tools for manipulating economic and financial data? Is there still nothing better than copying data from PDFs to Excel? Do Bloomberg terminals come with detailed tools for economic reasoning?

As students we were trained to do a lot of econometrics in stata, but on the sales desk nearly all our analysis was done via excel and proprietary tools (that was monkey work though, I’d like to know what back office and risk departments work with).
