Who wants to help me make sense of the idea of karmic seeds, which only fruit at a later time, in the context of an ontology of momentary events...this is what I’m currently banging my head against...
KTGR liked to use an analogy of a tape recorder, when explaining the cittamatra model of how the alaya-vijnana stored karmic traces and all that. (I think there is a version of this in Progressive Stages) It’s all rather convoluted. I don’t envy you trying to make sense of it.

The concept of karmic imprints on the alaya-vijnana, from a yogacara perspective, depends on misperception (ie: parikalpita). If the meditator experiences a dependent mind moment’ (ie: paratantra) as being empty of perceived/perceiver, then no karmic trace is left (parinispanna).

I’m notoriously bad at this stuff and mix up the various views according to my heretic freewheeling chaos and to the annoyance of sincere students of madhyamaka philosophy - but perhaps that gives some ideas for where to look for clarification.
