I don't have general tips for the distinction because both depression and autistic burnout (assuming that as a category), present with significant variety/severity. The process was about becoming aware of symptoms, and sorting out what did or didn't seem like depression.

For context; a decade or so ago I was severely depressed, and I got better — mostly inexplicably — so I'm very familiar with what depression is like for me. AB had some major differences, eg: apart from some initial fear, my mood was very good even in the worst stages.

I have no expertise in this field, only some personal experience. I suspect that there is no magic fix in distinguishing and/or healing, depression and/or AB. Working 1:1 with a professional made me aware of AB as a distinct possibility, which then allowed me/us to notice stuff
