Been thinking about the role and utility of polite fictions, and the resulting complications. Different people inherit different sets of them and not many people know how to navigate multiple competing sets of fictions in a tactful way

This is a huge question because our ability to judge what is fiction and how symbols/stories work, is shaped by our own stories, the various cultures which we’re entangled with. I believe my world-image because it’s a functional coping strategy, but I forget that it’s a model.

Any tips on the sort of good faith questions which are productive in navigating the plurality of polite fictions?

🤔 interestingly I think a lot of it boils down to tone, which is of course notoriously difficult to convey online. Some cues are things like, "I like what you're getting at with X", "it seems to me like you're saying Y, is that correct? but if Y, then Z?"

If you watch videos of interviews, you’ll notice that sometimes when an interviewer asks a good question, the interviewee lights up. “Wow, nobody ever asked me that before. I’ve never thought of that. Huh. Let’s see...” A good question can actually be a gift you give someone
