☸︎ David L. McMahan, in his revelatory _Making of Buddhist Modernism_, described it as “global folk Buddhism.” The de facto meditation system of global folk Buddhism is the Mahasi method (with local variations). It’s become market-dominant, nearly synonymous with “meditation.”

I really should re-read that book. I must have been drunk nearly the whole time I read it last time, as I can barely remember any of it.
