The sad thing is that there is no space in modern society to express that madness. If you try to do it you become ostracized and cast out, because it doesn't fit "common sense". The best expression is probably through art. Where people expect things being crazy.https://twitter.com/misen__/status/1083604705534717952 …

Interesting point. Once you know you’re mad, bad, strange and silly in a bunch of ways, what do you do with it? There a practical things a person might do, but unfortunately the dominant cultural frame is pretty lousy in this area. I think you’re right about art as a option

Pagan festivals were a way to express that madness in ancient times. But then Roman Christianity happened. Burning man is a modern version of the festivals. But day-to-day I don't see much of a choice except art. Or finding a tribe that shares your madness.

I think there is a place for collective rites — normalisation & expression in a group — but I think we can do much better than expressions of neurotic release, although that's probably better than suppression. Day-to-day, people need heuristics to relate to their own experience.

Vajrayana Buddhism has some practices which I have found useful in this area. For the curious, chapter four of The Myth of Freedom introduces some of these ideas....but unfortunately — as smarter people than I have explained — there are some serious issues and barriers to entry.

also, I'm a sloppy thinker, so I'd suggest to those interested in this area, to read through the rest of David Chapman's series of posts about the shadow. He talks about this area with a clarity and honesty about what a messy topic it is, that I find admirable.
