I think there is a place for collective rites — normalisation & expression in a group — but I think we can do much better than expressions of neurotic release, although that's probably better than suppression. Day-to-day, people need heuristics to relate to their own experience.
Vajrayana Buddhism has some practices which I have found useful in this area. For the curious, chapter four of The Myth of Freedom introduces some of these ideas....but unfortunately — as smarter people than I have explained — there are some serious issues and barriers to entry.

also, I'm a sloppy thinker, so I'd suggest to those interested in this area, to read through the rest of David Chapman's series of posts about the shadow. He talks about this area with a clarity and honesty about what a messy topic it is, that I find admirable.
