Weird habit change I hadn't picked up on: I am far more inclined to sniff objects to examine them than I used to be a year or so ago.

It's one of those bizarre "civilized" ideas in many cultures, that it's somehow inappropriate to use your nose for much of anything except food.

I do this constantly, plus people barely even smell their food. I was at a restaurant and sniffed my wine glass before they poured any wine, the waiter freaked - immediately apologised and changed all the glasses because he assumed you’d only sniff it if it was bad

Right? Makes perfect sense to sniff your food. You can't always see spoilt food. But people would rather find out after they take a bite...

But smell also carries the strongest emotional memory. Things I've long-since forgotten in *declarative* memory just pop up with smells. The smell of people you used to know better, for instance, is... interesting.
