Most of us do not rise above our circumstances. We are our circumstances. 
Plus, we like to bracket off the circumstances so that any ‘rise’ gets perceived as being an act of will, bravery, supremacy.

Yes. I like to use the example of Dr Ambedkar who did rise above his circumstances, but was helped along by a wealthy benefactor and by the British practice of hiring Dalits for their army.
