Can someone explain to me why the UK (British?) parliment has a magic stick and what it means when someone picks it up? I take it’s a protest, but what does the act symbolically signify? Are there times when it is appropriate to handle the stick? (Scepter? Mace?)

There are a number of magic sticks, normally representative of the monarch. The mace in the House of Commons has been handled in protest on a number of occasions....although I’m not sure the mace is a suitable symbol in this case, unless it was used to bash May over the head.

Now I’m curious why the mace is chucked about in protest even though it is representative of the monarch.
Maybe @lloyd_rm can shed some light on the matter.
