Can someone explain to me why the UK (British?) parliment has a magic stick and what it means when someone picks it up? I take it’s a protest, but what does the act symbolically signify? Are there times when it is appropriate to handle the stick? (Scepter? Mace?)
There are a number of magic sticks, normally representative of the monarch. The mace in the House of Commons has been handled in protest on a number of occasions....although I’m not sure the mace is a suitable symbol in this case, unless it was used to bash May over the head.
