An "expert" gives you advice with great certainty: "If you do this, then I promise that "X" will happen..." If you follow the advice and the result doesn't arise, give yourself permission to stop taking advice from this person (and those like him).

"Stop doing useless things" sounds obvious, no? But consider that people do the same things, carry out the same rituals, etc., year and year, and rarely stop and think: "Is this actually working, or am I fooling myself?"

In an attempt to build self-esteem, some cultivate an excessively rosy view of their experience. This feels good, but will lead one to habitually believe passing thoughts without question. This is a kind of mindlessness.

Conversations with students of my meditation teachers made it evident that many asked questions in the hope that they'd receive the answer they wanted. Some, disappointed with the response, dismissed it and did as they pleased.
