Fictions are perfectly fine, provided we realize they are fictions, that we use them for practical purposes, and that we realize they don't represent ultimate reality, whatever that may be

I think that's a helpful way of looking at fictions. I recently tweeted some nonsensical drivel about bathing in waffle; your point here - about realising fictions as fiction, to be used in the knowledge that their representation of 'ultimate reality' is very limited - is good.
