I would guess that most mystics have undiagnosed temporal-lobe epilepsy or are inducing partial seizures in themselves through meditation. Which is why their methods don't work for most people most of the time.

It's curious to me how in many cultures the mystics and shamans are considered to be gifted, and bring value to their immediate community by virtue of their fringe capacities. It'd be sub-optimal for mystical experience to be widely accessible, you want a stable majority.

But Western meditators often assume that all 'mystical' experience is and should be accessible to all. It's consumer culture applied to atypical experience. Kind of sad. I suspect that Krippner's work on shamanic models of schizophrenia extends to autism & epilepsy, also.
