Controversial opinion: Even though I do think it's a problem that most representation of autistic characters in film and tv is of white cis men I also think that white cis autistic men need good representation too and they don't have it.

I don't want to see tv and films that centre white cis autistic men but I would like to see well written white autistic cis men as part of the cast of a tv show or film.

Representation of white cis autistic men is usually: -Extremely intelligent men -Misogynistic men -Men who hurt the people around them and get away with it because they're autistic

Not only do these portrayals make it seem like BAME/PoC autistics, queer autistics and autistic women don't exist, they also make it seem like white autistic men can't have intellectual disabilities, like they all have good jobs but aren't good at relationships.

There's misogyny in autistic communities, I would love to see that explored well in a show rather than it being portrayed as an inherent part of being an autistic man. As it is representation of white cis autistic men just reinforces the idea that autistic men aren't responsible

for their actions and they can treat people however they want because they're autistic.

We never see a white cis autistic male character (or any other autistic characters) as just another character in the show, it's always about their autism. Where are the autistic dads? Teachers? Best friends? Why can't white cis autistic men be secondary characters?

The Bridge is the only show I've seen where an autistic lead character is just a character on the show. It's not about autism. Sonya Cross doesn't say she's autistic & autism is never mentioned on screen because she's a cop and knows how important masking is for her career.

I realized I'm biased having worked on it but watch it for yourself and I think you'll agree (it's on hulu).

Have you seen the British/French version, The Tunnel? Clémence Poésy plays Elise very well - she said she loved the character, and it comes across - moreso that Helin as Saga Norén.

Yes. I thought it was good even though I don’t believe they had any autistic consultants involved. When a show isn’t “about” the autism, I find there tends to be less blatant stereotypical representations in general, especially in a drama.
