The extent to which mental stuff is physical stuff in drag keeps amazing me. Example: when meditating, let your eyes wander, then fix them. The difference is dramatic and (for me, at least) immediate.
Yes, strange how use of different gazes can have some really dramatic effects. eg: you can tell when vision is too fixed/tense, because you almost immediately start going into a sort of trance state. Tension around the eyes is pretty instructive IME.

Hmm. I tend to go into trances more outside, especially when looking at things not immediately in front of me. Never occured to me that it was a function of that.

Interesting. It might be a factor, hard to say. Visual field is fascinating; been used in many weird ways by meditators throughout history. Much like pranayama stuff, the 'energetic' component is a bit of a live wire. Some practices explicitly connect to 'inner-energetic system'.
